Have you recently felt like you need a change in career, perhaps you want to learn something new? Our NPORS training courses could be the perfect starting point, especially if you want to start out as a construction labourer.
Let’s take a closer look at the role of a construction labourer, as well as how to become one, and training that could benefit an individual.
WHAT IS A CONSTRUCTION LABOURER?
A construction labourer is an entry level job for anyone looking to get into the industry. It’s perfect for anyone starting out their career.
Whilst it is still important to obtain the necessary qualifications to work in this role, it is an easier role to get into, and learn the ropes before progressing.
So what does a construction labourer do?
The variety of tasks will vary, however this is a fantastic way of learning different skills. Everyday jobs could include, but are not limited to:
- Laying foundations
- Trench digging
- Building walls
- Clearing sites
- Unloading building materials
- Ordering construction equipment
Due to the nature of most of these jobs, the individual would be required to be in good physical shape, and hold a certain level of fitness. Once you’ve learnt the basics of being a construction labourer, it will open up a load of career possibilities!
TOP TIPS TO GETTING A JOB IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
In order to get into this type of work, there are certain requirements that need to be met first. Firstly, all workers should have a valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) card. Although it is not essential, most construction firms and building sites will not permit workers to enter without one. This is mainly for the health and safety on site, and reducing the chance of accidents.
Secondly, there are multiple courses that could prove beneficial to workers. We would highly recommend booking the following courses:
Plant machinery marshal
The NPORS N133 Plant Machinery Marshal course is great for anyone looking to be qualified in this particular role. However it is also an additional training course for beginners. Operators can get to grips with marshalling, moving, parking and working with construction equipment. All the additional knowledge without the added responsibility.
Operators will finish the training and be able to identify relevant PPE, conduct safety checks as well as successfully guiding plant machinery.
The course will run for one day, and the certificate will be valid for 5 years.
Site Safety Awareness
Are you a newbie to the construction industry?
The Site Safety Awareness course is fantastic for anyone looking to get some experience under their belt. Anyone that works on a building site will know that they can be very unsafe if safety guidelines are not adhered to. Booking onto our Site Safety Awareness course will ensure you have an understanding of:
- How to prevent accidents happening
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Reporting unsafe situations on site
Similar to the above course, the Sight Safety Awareness course can be achieved in one day. Again, it is also valid for 5 years. View the full course details here.
First aid courses
Having first aid trained employees benefits any sector, especially within construction. Would you know what to do if someone suddenly became unconscious, or fell on uneven ground? Our first aid training in Medway will provide you with all of the knowledge required.
We will base the training course length on any previous experience. Whether a refresher course is needed, or full, in depth training. Training will consist of either one of three days of training, and will be carried out in one of our classrooms.
Get hands-on experience with practical demonstrations, question and answer sessions and engaging activities. All individuals will be assessed throughout the course, and support will be offered where necessary.
All course information can be found on our website. We also offer an Emergency First Aid at Work course too!
