Health and safety can be a minefield in workplaces. It’s best for companies to know which health and safety courses they should invest in for their staff. Failing to meet the required health and safety standards will often lead to preventable incidents and potential hazards to employees. Especially in the construction sector! For businesses this will also mean hefty fines and certainly a damaged reputation.
So which health and safety courses would we recommend?
FIRE WARDEN TRAINING
Did you know that there were 149,779 fires in the UK in 2021 alone according to GOV UK National Statistics? That’s a staggering amount of fires, that could cause a lot of damage and be incredibly harmful for staff. However, how many of these could have been prevented with the correct health and safety training?
Most companies will carry out induction training with all new employees. This will often cover locating the extinguishers and where the fire evacuation points are. Nevertheless, it is vital that all employees have some knowledge of fire safety awareness within the workplace. For example, knowing how fires can be started, how to use extinguishers and evacuation procedures in place. It’s also important that there are dedicated fire wardens appointed.
There should be at least a couple of fire wardens available, do you know who yours is?
Our Fire Warden course is perfect for anyone looking to take the next step and take on more responsibility with the workplace. Training will last for half a day, and it is designed to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
The course content will consist of:
- Learning about different types of fire extinguishers
- Assembly points
- Carrying out a safe fire evacuation
- Fire drills
- Identifying fire hazards within the workplace
- Different types of fires
Once individuals have successfully completed the course, their qualification will last for 3 years before it will need to be renewed.

MANUAL HANDLING COURSE
Most work sectors will need staff to carry out manual handling tasks at some point, whether they work in a physically demanding role or not. It is a term given to the task of lifting and moving heavy objects.
It’s always best to know how to keep yourself safe within the workplace to avoid any injuries. Although it doesn’t seem like a strenuous task, over a third of all workplace injuries are caused by manual handling. Poor manual handling can result in muscle strains and can often lead to musculoskeletal disorders.
Our manual handling course can also be completed in half a day. It will also be valid for 5 years before renewal is required.
FIRST AID AT WORK
First aid training is one of our most popular health and safety courses, and is essential for all workplaces. In line with the Health and Safety Act of 1981, all workplaces will need to have appropriate first aid equipment, as well as qualified staff to carry out any first aid.
Here at the Diggerland Plant Training School, our first aid courses will vary in duration depending on any existing experience. We can offer a one or three day first aid course or if you are already first aid trained, we offer a two day refresher.
The course content that will be covered include helping someone who:
- Is unresponsive or not breathing
- Has broken a bone
- Feels faint or has passed out
- Are suffering from a seizure or heart attack
- Has a head injury
- Has has a severe allergic reaction
- Is diabetic
The full course details can be viewed on our website.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING
Speaking of first aid training we would also recommend another popular, upcoming course. Not only is physical first aid important, an employee’s mental health is just as crucial.
Figures from HSE found that 822,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2020/21. In order to tackle mental health issues in the workplace it is essential that the right training is provided. This will enable potential situations to be identified and how they can be dealt with correctly.
Whilst it is not the law to train staff in mental health first aid, the Government is discussing making it mandator. Although we currently only offer standard first aid training and emergency first aid at work, we hope to soon introduce mental health first aid as part of our health and safety courses.
WORKING AT HEIGHT
Working at height is mainly for workers in the construction and manual sector. If a job requires working above the ground level then it is vital that correct training is provided.
Our NPORS working at height course will enable individuals to cover:
- Using the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) required for working at height
- Show an understanding of the safe practices
- Understand what is meant by the term ‘competent person’
- Explain the measures that need to be followed to prevent any accidents or injuries
Anyone looking to book onto our working at height course can expect to successfully pass in half a day. Training will be carried out in our classroom, and be based on a theory and practical assessment. Thinking about booking?
